This is a very common cause of vaginitis, which occurs with increased frequently in pregnancy because of an elevated sugar content in the vaginal cells anfd the high acidity of the vagina itself. Monilia has been associated with causing a miscarriage but only when an intrauterine device (IUD) has been in place. The (IUD) may itself be the cause of miscarrying the pregnancy. It probably is not important as a cause of miscarriage. But, if monilia is present in pregnancy, it should be treated, because it cause discomfort and may also infect the baby as it passes through the vagina. It cam cause an episiotomy to heal poorly. Safe treatment with nystain is available in pregnancy.
