The later a stitch is inserted into the cervix, asy after 18weeks, the grater the chance of infection occurring there which, in turn, may mean the membranes will become infected, thus enabling the fetus to be affected or the membranes to rupture. We are not sure why there is grater protection if the stitch is placed earlier. Antibiotics are often given following the procedure as a precaution. This is also one reason why the stitch should be removed about two weeks before you expect to go into labor, as it will give your body time to destroy any cervical infection associated with the stitch and will prevent the uterus from becoming infected after delivery.
IUD in place.
If your pregnancy is diagnosed while you have an intrauterine device (IUD) still in place, infection may be a significant problem, as the (IUD) acts as a foreign body in the uterus promoting infection. There is a grater risk of infection if the strings of the device are protruding into the uterus. The doctor usually removes the device if the strings are visible. So, if pregnancy occurs with an (IUD) in place, there is an increased risk of miscarriage.
Campylobacter
An organism that cause gastroenteritis has been implicated in causing miscarriage. We do not understand how it leads to miscarriage.
