SLE is a disturbance of the immune system, which means the patients from antibodies against their own tissue. It is a much more common disorder in women than in men, and unfortunately it affects women particularly in their childbearing years. SLE is one illness which has been associated with an increased rate of miscarriage in part because there is an increased incidence of anti-phospholipid antibodies. You should be tested for SLE if your doctor is running tests for the causes of a miscarriage; all that is needed is a blood sample, which is tested for antibodies to DNA.
We are not sure why this kind of miscarriage occurs, but antibodies are a probable cause. Fortunately, modern medical treatment often using steroids, such as prednison, is effective in keeping SLE under control and has allowed patients with this disease to carry pregnancies to term.
Usually women with SLE are already aware of the condition, ad their doctors treat such pregnancies with due a\care and caution. Without treatment the miscarriage rate would be as high as 30 percent. Usually the loss occurs between the 2nd and 3rd month of the pregnancy in untreated cases.
